Billboard.Com Reviews “Holding You Down”

Check out billboard.com review of Jazmine’s new single which is available on itunes now…

Scratches, ad-libs and myriad samples threaten to overwhelm the casual R&B listener on Jazmine Sullivan’s new single, “Holding You Down.” But her powerful, slightly raspy voice ultimately commands attention on a song that’s still a successful intersection of hip-hop and R&B without compromising either genre’s values. Here, the Philadelphia singer laments the cyclical battering of love, her grief punctuated by an emotional yet authoritative performance. “I feel so stupid, foolish, lovin’ you this way, but what can I say?” Sullivan sings, while Missy Elliott handles production and gives the track a primordial hip-hop core. The oft-used drum break from the Honey Drippers’ “Impeach the President,” along with a curious but well-executed sample of ’90s rap crew the Firm, collectively endow “Holding You Down” with the rawness of a mixtape cut. Yet Sullivan once again subordinates the hectic beat with her spiraling chorus.

“Holding You Down” Reviews

Jazmine’s new single which hit the net and radios yesterday has received some very good reviews from popular music blogs on the net. Read a few below and don’t forget to REQUEST the song at your local radio stations.

Toyaz-World:

The Missy Elliott-produced cut is a maddeningly infectious Hip Hop-Soul hybrid with a progressive throwback beat. In the song, the singer feels regretful about holding onto a man who is not showing her as much love. The track which also features Missy is reminding me of something Lauryn Hill would have put out during her heyday mixed in with early Mary. I was kind of sceptical about it at first because I did not like ‘Need U Bad’ but this song is more my flavour. Nonetheless, Sullivan has finally arrived and it looks like she’s coming back strong.

Tyrone @ GlobalGrind.Com:

Jazmine Sullivan is back with a banger! Two years after the release of her stunning debut album Fearless, which spawned the hits “Need U Bad,” “Bust Your Windows,” and “Lions, Tigers & Bears,” the Philldelphia native is back with her new single “Holding U Down (Going In Circles).” The track, produced by Missy Elliott and her production partner Lamb, is a throwback to the hip-hop soul of Mary J. Blige’s first few albums (the first few lines of the song are a direct reference to “Be Happy” off of Mary’s My Life album). The track is based on the same sample as Nas’ classic track “Affirmative Action,” (off of 1996′s It Was Written…),. Jazmine has one of the most powerful, distinctive voices in R&B today, and we’re glad to have her back. If this track is anything to go by, her sophomore album may be another classic.

Note: This review was cut short because other parts did not include Jazmine Sullivan…

At BET’s “SOS Saving Ourselves: Help for Haiti” telethon on Friday (February 5), Mary J. Blige treated the crowd to not one but two songs. At BET’s “SOS Saving Ourselves: Help for Haiti” telethon on Friday (February 5), Mary J. Blige treated the crowd to not one but two songs. For the first track, “We Gonna Make It,” from her new Stronger With Each Tear LP, the singer was joined onstage by R&B singer Jazmine Sullivan. The two looked glamorous — Jazmine in a black dress, Mary in a decorated black leather jacket and blond coif — but the message was serious and hopeful.
